spicy shrimp with garlic

i'm telling you...whole foods recipes are rocking my world lately. josh made this and served it with basmati rice and i loved it. we felt like we were cheating a bit because we bought the shrimp at trader joe's, the cilantro and serrano pepper from shaw's, and the other ingredients came from our cupboard. the recipe says it serves 6, but the two of us inhaled it!

Spicy Shrimp with Garlic

  • 1 lb medium-size shrimp, peeled, deveined, patted dry
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 tsp black mustard seeds
  • 5 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 serrano chile, minced (wear gloves)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp roughly chopped cilantro

Place shrimp in a bowl and dust with cayenne and turmeric. Rub seasonings onto shrimp. Heat oil in frying over medium-high heat. When oil is hot, add mustard seeds. In a couple of seconds the seeds will begin to pop; at this time add garlic (be careful not to burn) and stir. When garlic turns golden, add serrano chile and stir. Add shrimp and stir. Fry over high heat until they are done (shrimp will be opaque), about 3 minutes. Season with salt and cilantro. Serve with basmati rice and a crisp garden salad.

  1. Love that dish! It looks soooo delish! The next time you make it, you should try it with Trader Joe's naan. Found it this weekend; it's a new item!
