interior love

happy monday. hope you all had a fabulous weekend. you deserve it.  this home of federica vittorio bottoli and her family in mantua, italy featured in milk magazine has such clean lines and such beautiful architectural elements that i am feeling a calm and zenful tingling feeling all over my body. i am in love with this house and it has motivated me to edit, edit, edit my own home.

more from maine

here are some more pictures from our trip to maine. after looking them over, i guess we packed a lot into three days. we celebrated my brother's birthday complete with a nature made cooler in the snow, blueberry pie and lemon bomb cake. the girls loved exploring my parent's backyard and they also loved fighting over who got to curl up in wiggy's dog bed. we broke up the five hour drive on the way home by stopping in cape elizabeth, maine for a little walk to crescent beach. and i don't think i have worn as many bright colors together in one day as i did on easter. after a long new england winter, i guess i was feeling the spring elation.

marshall point light house

i could not make a trip up to maine without showing you some of the natural beauty that lies within it's borders. there really is something about that state that calms me and centers me.

josh took the girls on a little hike around marshall point light house in port clyde, maine on saturday after they were feeling a little better from being sick. he took these photos while i was at home getting ready for the easter meal. i love the striations in the rocks and the coloring of the lichens on the rocks.

all photos by joshua tompkins.

easter dinner

it is difficult for my family to sit back and not make a fuss about a holiday. we really get into all the preparations, including setting the table, finding a centerpiece, coming up with a menu. everyone is involved in the process and is spirited about the special day. for easter we decided to do a family dinner at my parent's house in maine on saturday night because we had to drive home on sunday. the dinner included ham, mustard sauce, deviled eggs, scalloped potatoes with leeks, a green saladasparagus, and hot cross buns. and for dessert i made coconut cupcakes and creamy lemon squares.

a pewter and wicker bottle basket collection

my mom has a passion for collecting and i love having some down time to explore their house and take pictures of her artful displays. above is her collection of pewter and wicker bottle baskets.

she was an antique dealer with her parents and my dad around the time she was my age now. so i have happy memories as a little girl spending weekends at antique shows, meeting interesting dealers and then helping my mom entertain her friends she had met through antiquing at dinner parties at my parent's home. it was a huge part of my childhood. collections and antiques.

what do you like to collect?

easter morning in maine

hello all! hope you are enjoying the chirping birds and warmer temperatures that spring brings. we just got back from a quick trip to maine to celebrate easter at my parent's house. my brother and his wife came too.

it wouldn't be a religious holiday without a bug hitting our family. is God trying to tell me something? haha.  the girls came down with it the friday night we arrived, but were feeling better by easter morning thank goodness. i found the bunny costumes on the clearance rack at  h+m this january. not sure for how much longer they will agree to wear them, but i will take as many pictures as i can while it lasts. they sort of remind me of the bunny costume randy (the younger brother) is forced to try on in the christmas story.

d.i.y. play dough

the mushiness. the squishiness. it really is therapeutic to run your fingers through these globs of goo. not like i spent a good chunk of time this morning doing just this. ha. and the bonus is the play dough smells springy and fruity because they are made with jell-o. the girls and i made the four colors above after school two weeks ago. we kept them in air tight containers and we- i mean they-have been playing with them since. they have been using kitchen tools, like butter knives and forks to let their imaginations soar. i'm a big fan of this recipe. it's inexpensive. your kiddies get to participate in the entire process of making the play dough. and then they get to enjoy the fruits of their labor while playing with it for weeks afterwards.

here is the recipe from modern parents messy kids.
